  • I Need a Nap

Last night I had the opportunity to dine with two kids, age 2 and 4.  Maggie, the two year old, isn’t talking yet, but was extremely expressive and interactive regardless.  At one point, she kept me entertaining her with a game involving her passing her mom’s cell phone to me and insisting that I have a conversation on it, and then taking it back and pretending to take my picture with it.  Max, the four year old, wouldn’t talk to me at first (I tend to have that effect on men), but after sizing me up, he determined that I was okay to talk to and proceeded to regale me with stories, jokes, and, in an attempt to mimic his Uncle Jimmy, magic tricks involving pretending to put a crayon in his ear and pull it out of his nose (said uncle also convinced him to put crayons in each of his nostrils, much to his mother’s dismay).  He also asked me dozens of questions, performed a demonstration of pseudo-martial arts involving two butter knives, insisted that his root beer tasted better when the paper wrapper from the straw was soaking in it, and took a bite of a crayon (hopefully not one of the ones that was formerly in his nostril) and declared that it tasted like wax.  During the course of dinner, I’m not really certain that either child ended up eating all that much, but the table looked like a hurricane hit it.

After dinner, I was supposed to help my friend Elisabeth finish up a bottle of wine, but I had to beg off.  I was exhausted, in large part from my pint-sized dinner companions.  I came to a few conclusions:  First, I definitely want kids someday, if at all possible.  Second, I definitely am not ready for them anytime soon.  I am sure I’ll be a great mom someday, but boy, do I need to rest up first.  Not to mention that it might be helpful to have a husband around to help out.

  • Another 10 Seconds

Towards my 15 minutes of fame.  Yes, that was me you saw eating a spam musubi at the new Bamn! automat on CNN’s American Morning this morning.  Missed it?  Watch the video clip here (there’s a short commercial first — consider yourself warned).

  • Tapas = Committment-phobic?

I don’t think I would judge a guy based on the restaurant he picks for our first date — well, let me rephrase that.  I wouldn’t make assumptions about his character based on the cuisine.  I would, however, be likely to make judgments about his taste based on the individual restaurant.

  • A Few of My Favorite Things

    – A weekend at the beach, even if it’s rainy, filled with good company, paella, sangria, games, and laughter.
    – Coming home to a Fresh Direct delivery.
    – Dinner at Babbo, especially with good friends.
    – The octopus with chilis at Peasant wine bar.  Don’t forget to sop up all the juices with their crusty bread.
    – Hearing the joy in a voice mail from friends announcing the arrival of their newly adopted daughter (congrats, Eric & Bill!).

  • Ain’t That the Truth

From Tanya Weineman Steel at the Epi-log:

[W]e women are tired of men who are in better shape than us and who watch their diet and exercise more than we do.

Amen, sister, couldn’t have said it better myself.
She goes on to talk about how the hottest guys in Hollywood are ones who have a few pounds on them, have a healthy relationship with food, and know how to enjoy themselves without overdoing it.  There’s definitely a difference between a healthy balance and an unhealthy obsession.  Wonder what Derek would think about that based on some of his recent posts?  That said, I’m off for a run and then a trip to the Greenmarket.  See — balance!

  • The Weekend in Pictures

    Katie
    Dragonfly
    Jeff
    Braids
    Fish

From top to bottom:  1) The Lovely Miss Katie and her sister Jenny at he birthday dinner at ‘inoteca; 2) a dragonfly at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden; 3) we convinced Jeff to stay in town so that we wouldn’t have to drive upstate (thanks, Jeff!); 4) after drinking wine in Jenn & Carolyn’s backyard for a while, we decided to french braid each other’s hair; and 5) Jimmy and I grilled a delicious dinner up on his gorgeous and tranquil roof deck.  There were a few things that didn’t make it onto the camera, including a visit with Mom & Stephen, a nap or two, a pit stop at Winnie’s for karaoke, our picnic in Prospect Park, dinner at Cubana Cafe, and drinks at Brooklyn Social

I had completely forgotten that Grant Lee Phillips was playing last night — after having some smoky barbecue at R.U.B. with my now quite pregnant friend Allison (they had ribs this time), I headed to the Knitting Factory and met Ryan for the show.  His latest album, nineteeneighties, features covers of some of his (and my) favorite eighties songs.  Gotta love that.

Tonight is the Lovely Miss Katie’s birthday celebration, then I’ll be sticking around for the weekend (for a relaxing change).

  • Aloooooooha!

    Tiki
I’m back from Hawaii and am kicking myself for not scheduling a much longer trip.  I stayed in Waikiki (a.k.a. tourist central) and didn’t see all that much of Oahu, although I managed to go snorkeling (saw some huge turtles) and hiking.  If I go back, I’d love to go to the North Shore of Oahu, Maui, and maybe some other spots that are less built up.  We also went to a luau, which was as terrifying as it sounds (think Disney-fied Hawaii), but it was so ridiculous that all you could really do was just laugh it off and drink Mai Tai’s.  And in case you were wondering when you look at the pictures, we got rear-ended on our way back from the hike.  We were all okay, but I documented everything for the insurance company since I happened to have my camera.

Ate two fantastic meals — one at Momomo, a Japanese itzakaya where I had incredibly fresh sushi, and succulent fried baby shrimp, and the other at the Side Street Inn.  I knew we were in great shape when the cab driver asked us if we really wanted to go there.  "It’s local food," he said, hesitantly.  "Perfect."  We had simple but tasty ahi poke, beef poke laced with cilantro, a locally grown salad with a tangy red wine vinaigrette, crab and artichoke dip, and their famous pork chops and fried rice.  I also think I filled my pina colada quota for the next few years.  Enjoy the pictures!

  • Just Catchin’ Up

First of all, in case anyone was wondering what was up with yesterday’s post, Vox is a new blogging system that’s in previews right now.  I’ve been playing around with it — let me know if you’d like an invitation.  Not sure I like the way it displays here on TypePad when you cross-post, though.

The other morning, when I went running, Lance Armstrong (or at least his voice) congratulated me on "my longest workout yet": a 4.8 mile run according to my Nike+iPod.  I don’t think it was quite that long — I think I need to calibrate the thing with a jog around Washington Square Park, which is roughly a half-mile.  Was going to do that this morning but couldn’t get out of bed.  Perhaps this was due to the pig pickin’ I went to last night — we went to Daisy May’s BBQ for the half-pig to wish Rob well before his six-week-long trek.

Thanks to all for the Waikiki food recommendations — keep ’em coming!

  • Maine Interrupted

    Lobster bake at Savoy

Thanks to Mother Nature, Orbitz, and Continental, our trip to Maine was cancelled, which was quite a bummer.  It was nice, however, to have a completely unscheduled weekend in the city, not to mention a three-day weekend.  To make up for the trip, I ate lobster all weekend, starting with a lobster roll at Pearl Oyster Bar on Friday night with Katie and Greta, eggs with lobster and spinach for brunch on Sunday at Ditch Plains, and capped off with Savoy’s lobster and clam bake last night.  I also beat my personal record for running — just over four miles!  In between all that, I made it out to the beach — just a quick trip, but super-relaxing, nonetheless.  We’re going to try to reschedule our Maine trip for a weekend in September.
