  • Booze You Can Use: Drink for the Dogs!

LupecbadassEach month, LUPEC NYC holds an event called Broad Appeal, where a female bartender and her "celebrity" male barback make special cocktails and donate proceeds to charity. This month, Ivy Mix and Miguel Calvo, both dog-lovers, will be behind the bar, with proceeds benefitting the wonderful Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. Ivy and I both got our pups from Badass, and they are an all-volunteer operation, so every bit helps. Sadly, I'll be out of town, but go have a drink and tell 'em Moxie sent you. 8-12 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21st at Macao Trading Company.

I made it back from NOLA in one piece, and actually feeling pretty good. I had such a wonderful time, and got to spend quality time with some of my favorite people from all across the country, most notably @rockdoggydog, @allanvkatz & @m_quinn. I even got to spend quality time with people I don’t see nearly enough of in NYC, including @jordanarothman, @chriselford, @vinbar44, @livethelushlife, @creativedrunk & @stevierosenyc.

I had a much better time at Tales this time around. I’d say that part of it was that I knew what to expect, part of it was that I had fewer obligations, and part of it was that I skipped a lot of things on my tentative schedule, focused on the things I wanted to do and the people I wanted to see, and generally just rolled with it. This mentality started when my direct flight out of NYC got cancelled and I ended up taking a three-leg trip just to make sure I escaped the vicious weather that was predicted for much of the East Coast. That bit of  ridiculousness paid off, and I made it to NOLA well before my luggage did — it was on the flight on which I was originally rescheduled. I landed and went straight to Coop’s, where festivities were already in progress.

Highlights of the trip included a visit to Willie Mae’s Scotch House, dinner at Arnaud’s, Cochon & Maurepas Foods, drinks at Cure, Belloq, and SoBou, Pig & Punch, and shenanigans with friends near and far.

    Points of note:

    – I ignored my own advice and went out one steamy night without my trusty water bottle. That night, I was dying for water, and it was hard to come by. Until I found some, I made do with a glass of ice-cold champagne.

    – Sometimes, a frozen Irish coffee from Erin Rose totally hits the spot.

    – Always keep an open mind at Tales — take advantage of a last-minute invite, taste something new, and be welcoming to strangers. You’ll have a much better time that way.

    – Chicken tastes even better when it’s hand-fed to you by the farmer who raised it.

    – If there is a zombie apocalypse and/or a drought, you want @rockdoggydog to be your roommate; he’ll make sure all the supplies are covered.

    – I didn’t hang out much at the Old Absinthe House this year, and I didn’t really miss it. I also went to bed pretty early my last night after a lovely dinner and a few drinks, which made for a much more pleasant re-entry to NYC.

    See y’all next year!

  • Booze You Can Use: Have a Daiquiri

    2008_05_30-daiquiri4photo by Nora Maynard

Apparently yesterday was National Daiquiri Day. Yes, there is such a thing. A daiquiri is one of those classic cocktails that is ideal for the summer, and it's simple as hell — fresh lime juice, white rum, and either superfine sugar or simple syrup. I'm actually fortunate enough to have a nice selection of white rums around the house at the moment, including Flor de Cana, Plantation 3 Stars White Rum, and Brugal Extra Dry, so perhaps I'll make a mini daiquiri flight with each to see which I prefer.

    Daiquiri
    2 ounces white rum
    juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 tsp of superfine sugar or 1 tsp simple syrup
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Sip & enjoy, preferably at the beach.

  • Booze You Can Use: Have Some Sangria

Sangria. It goes down oh so well, especially in the summer. Too well, often. Plus, it the kind of thing that you make by the pitcherful — who makes one glass of sangria?!  The possibilities are endless, really — start out with a wine of your choice, toss in some fruit, maybe some brandy, curacao or liqueur of some sort, some sparkling water, adjust to taste. You really can't go dreadfully wrong. If you're looking for places to sip sangria in NYC, check out my latest on CBS New York. If you want to try something a little different, try this lovely looking Sangria Blanc recipe from Jaimie Boudreau.

    Sangria Blanc

    1/2 bottle of white wine
2 oz St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
    1 oz Martin Miller's Gin
    2 slices lemon
    2 slices lime
seasonal fruit (berries would be great this time of year)

Build in a pitcher full of ice adding liqueur last. Stir, top with ice and more wine if necessary. Serve in an ice filled goblet or Collins glass with fruit.

  • Booze You Can Use: Have a Jack Rose

    JackrosePhoto: Tasting Table

Why do I always forget about the Jack Rose? I was reminded of it (again) as I was perusing this fantastic Tasting Table Back Bar piece (no, I didn't write it). The Jack Rose featured here is from Clover Club's Brad Farran. It's a fairly basic drink, and I'd recommend that you either purchase some good small batch grenadine or make your own (it's easy — here's Audrey Saunders' recipe). Take a close look at Brad's recipe — he also offers two variations.

    Jack Rose
2 ounces Laird's bonded apple brandy
    ¾ ounce fresh lime juice
    ¾ ounce grenadine

Pour apple brandy, lime juice and grenadine into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake well, then strain into a sour or coupe glass and serve.

  • Whirling Dervish

    Bottled Negroni

I'm about to hop on a plane to Jacksonville for this year's Equal Justice Conference. Given the frantic pace of this week and last week, I'm looking forward to what will hopefully be my first decent night's sleep in over a week. That said, the crazy has been worth it so far — I got to spend time with some of my favorite cocktail friends from near and far, watched my father graduate and hung with the family a bit, and had some wonderful food and drink. This carbonated negroni, pictured above, was a highlight. I now have two cases of them in my apartment, so there may be an impromptu get-together at my apartment when I return . . .

  • Booze you Can Use: Have a Spritz

    Aperol-spritz
Last night at Speed Rack we were serving two types of punch, one made with Aperol, which I like quite a bit. It's an italian aperitif with similar flavor notes to Campari, but much sweeter. I like to say that it's like Campari's baby sister. My first introduction to Aperol was in the iconic Italian Aperol Spritz (for some reason, I pronounce it more like shpritz, which may be wrong, but who cares?). This is a wonderful spring and summer drink — light, refreshing, bubbly, and much lower in alcohol than many traditional cocktails. That said, they go down quickly, so be careful! Perfect for a summer afternoon or brunch. Or anytime, really.

    Aperol Spritz
    3 parts prosecco
    2 parts Aperol
    1 part club soda
Pour over ice in a glass of your choosing (I prefer a large wine glass), give it a quick stir, and garnish with a slice of orange.

  • Booze You Can Use: Speed Rack Finals!!

    Speedrack
Sorry kids, no cocktail recipe today, because I want to make sure you get your tickets to the upcoming Speed Rack Finals! What is Speed Rack, you may ask? Well, it's a national competition created by and for female bartenders to promote female bartenders and to raise money for breast cancer research. The first round was held in New York (here's my recap), and subsequent rounds were held in nine other cities. The ten regional winners will compete along with six wildcard competitors on May 10th at 5 pm at the Prince George Ballroom. Tickets are $40 and include cocktails, punch, beer, and snacks, and best of all, proceeds benefit breast cancer research. I guarantee it'll be a raucous and fun evening, as bartenders from across the country will be in town for the Manhattan Cocktail Classic and they'll be cheering for their local favorites. Plus, @daisy17 and I are bartending again.
