Some folks think that I know everybody, and I’ll admit, I do know quite a large number of people. I also try to do my best to keep in touch with people I’ve met over the years, even if it’s not as frequently as I’d prefer. This fall, when I went out to the beach house in Kismet, my friend Katie and I somehow realized that we both knew Ben — she through her parents and I through working with him at Anderson Kill. The other night, we finally pulled the three of us together, along with Ben’s girlfriend Lillian, who currently works there. I hadn’t seen Ben in a number of years, and it was great to catch up and to meet Lillian, who shares my dislike for goat cheese. I took them to Otto (of course), and Bill was kind enough to point out the goat cheese on our cheese plate so that we wouldn’t stumble across it by mistake (thanks, Bill!). I’m looking forward to hanging out with them again — hopefully it’ll only take weeks rather than years this time.

Weekend Wrapup
In a nutshell: Friday, drinks with MT to show off my lawyer costume (which I wear somewhat infrequently), a party in honor of a blogger who recently passed away (where I met some lovely new folks), then on to Andrew‘s birthday party, where I saw many familiar and friendly faces, like Dens, Youngna, Krucoff, and Erin (from my wine clubsociety). Don’t let Dens’ scowl fool you — he’s quite nice in person.
Saturday, the Duckathlon (more on that later in Gothamist Food — it was an absolute blast!), a brief nap, then on to Matt’s pajama party. Today, recovery and a much needed trip to the gym. And by the way, Erika and Jeremy’s wedding is in today’s NYT, and it even includes a quote from yours truly (thanks, Jennie!).
For those of you I met at Matt’s party who might be looking for more pictures, you can find them all here.

The “Society” Wedding
Sometimes it’s a little bittersweet when a very close friend gets married. There’s a lingering fear in the back of your mind that they’re going to disappear, that you won’t see them quite as much. Erika, my closest friend from law school (we were even roommates for a year), got married on Sunday, and although the fear I mentioned is in the back of my mind, at the very least it’s in the waaay back, hidden behind a great deal of clutter and 80’s song lyrics. I don’t think I’ve seen Erika any less since she started dating Jeremy three years ago, and I’ve gotten to know him as well. They’re truly happy together, and above all else, that makes me happy.Their wedding was a blast. I’ve known Erika for about ten years now (gulp), and so I’ve gotten to know her friends and family over the years. There were mutual friends from law school I got to catch up with, a great band for dancing (they even played the Clash), excellent food, and even a friend of Jeremy’s who I had gone on a few dates with several years ago (yes, he’s still cute (and possibly reading this, so I should probably shut up before I embarrass myself)). And I was a bridesmaid — Erika was kind enough to save me from typical bridesmaid dress hideousness and give me an elegant, black, cleavage-enhancing number that I will definitely wear again (and by the way, in case you were wondering how the booty-busting went, although I did manage to bust off a bit of the booty, I am currently madly in love with my tailor). The best coincidence of the evening, however, was the fact that not only were Erika and Jeremy selected to be the featured wedding in next Sunday’s New York Times, (Erika and Jeremy, who are not the "high society" types frequently featured, seem to be a little puzzled about how they got selected) but that the reporter covering the wedding was my friend Jennie Tung from the Amalgamates, so I got to hang out with her as well! I’m looking forward to reading all about it this weekend.
Congratulations Erika and Jeremy! Hope you’re enjoying your honeymoon (they’re in New Zealand, so if you have any must see/must do ideas for them, shoot me a note — they’re a little behind on the planning; sort of a "figure it out as they go" kind of honeymoon).

The Birthday and the Booty
A perfect image from last night’s birthday party — the birthday boy himself, cupcake in one hand, Schlitz in the other. It was a fun and interesting evening, complete with fellow bloggers, folks from high school, a few of whom I hadn’t seen in years, and even someone who recognized me from a pro bono panel I did at Cardozo Law School recently. And when the mood of evening turned slightly sour for me thanks to some jackass behavior on someone’s part, I met up with friends for some late-night bitching over a glass of wine. Very thankful that I have friends who stay out late every now and again, and thank god for cell phones.
As a result, I’m pooped today, but still managed to make it to the gym — I’m on a bit of a mission, as there’s a bridesmaid’s dress that I have to wear in a few weeks that was feeling a tad too snug around the booty for my taste. Wish me luck — my booty and I have till February 20th to get our act together, so it’s back to the gym in the morning. Not to mention every morning and/or night until February 20th. Sigh.

Saturday Afternoon Ramblings

Tien called them "glommitts," Manhattan Transfer called them "bum-finger gloves." Call them what you will, but I absolutely love mine. I now have two pairs, and they are a savior when dealing with cell phones, metrocards, and everything else.
To continue the bday season (not mine anymore, sadly), last night was a birthday party at Double Happiness for a good friend from high school and his boyfriend, and tonight is Manhattan Transfer’s bday. He has assured me that there will be plenty of debauchery and cute single boys. What more can a girl ask for, really? Between now and then I have a bunch of errands to do, including getting my bridesmaid’s dress for Erika and Jeremy’s upcoming wedding altered. Erika, being the fabulous friend that she is, picked a super-hot, black Vera Wang number that not only will I be able to wear again, but it shows off my cleavage beautifully! Hey — if you’ve got it, flaunt it.
See you at the party!

Another Birthday Bash
Ellen and I co-hosted a birthday party at the Magician last night. It was so wonderful to have such a rich cross-section of all the folks in my life: friends from high school, college, camp, bloggers, wine
clubsociety, and other assorted riff-raff with whom I socialize. The only downside to hosting a big party in a crowded bar — not enough time or space to talk to everyone who came. Thanks to everyone who made it out, and extra-special thanks to the crew who made it for late-night karaoke at Winnie’s!You can see the whole album here (and yes, the photo above was posted through flick’r).

Flickr and Whatnot
This is a test post from
, a fancy photo sharing thing.Yes, I’ve joined flickr — will play with it a bit this weekend. Not sure what the advantages or disadvantages are of using it vs. just posting stuff up on my blog, but I’ll give it a whirl — after all, it’s free!
So tonight I have two birthday parties to attend, and given the weather, I was excited that they were both in Brooklyn. That is, until I looked at a map and realized that they were nowhere near each other and would require ridiculous subway transfers/walking in the freezing cold. First plan of action, however, as soon as my stupid Palm finishes synching here (which is taking forever since it seems to have died on me and I had to start from scratch) is to go home and take a short nap. That said, I have a feeling I’m only going to make it to the latter of the two birthdays (which happens to be the more subway-access-friendly of the two).
And speaking of birthdays — tomorrow night Ms. Standard Deviance and I are hosting our belated birthday bash. If you know me and didn’t receive an email, drop me a note and I’ll forward the details (it was most likely an oversight — my contacts are in about 5 different places these days).

Playing With Your Food
This is what happens when you’re a regular at a place that serves condiments along with their cheese plate and they want to make you laugh:Plus, there haven’t been nearly enough pictures up here this week. This piece of art is composed of two of the amarone cherries, a dab of the apricots with chili flakes and mustard seed, and my favorite, the truffled honey.
So I’ve been taking it easy this weekend. I stayed in Friday night to watch Donnie Darko and John B. ended up keeping me company, which was much nicer than watching it alone — I wasn’t really in the mood for solitude after my very anti-social week. Saturday I had brunch with some lovely ladies who blog, and then a few of us wandered down to Chinatown in the bitter cold to continue chatting and shopf for a few things. Later that night, I had dinner with my mom and stepfather, then met up with my friend Lauren for coffee. And since I had to walk by Otto on my way home, I had to check in the window to see who was there, and of course I saw Nic, David and Luke (from the wine
clubsociety). I stopped in, but kept the drinking to a minimum and was still in bed at a reasonable hour.Today, laundry, easing back into exercise, and some job-hunt-related stuff. Next week is back to full-speed, but I still have to be careful not to overdo it. We’ll see how it goes!
