  • And, We’re Off!

For the first of a series of trips over the coming month.  This time, to a wedding in Gautier, MS with an overnight in New Orleans.  Just doing my share to help boost the economy, not to mention celebrate along with my friend Ana, whose wedding was postponed due to Katrina.

  • You Know Your Hotel is Swanky When

    swanky bathroom the bidet

The hotel room is not only bigger than your apartment, but on top of the swanky robe, slippers, chocolates on the pillow, the featherbed, wifi, and the orchid in the bathroom, but there’s a bidet.  Just in case.

  • Apparently It’s Time . . .

for me to move to Brooklyn.  Why?  Because in one evening between the hours of 7 and 10:30, I not only got to see the folks I came out there to see — Jonathan, Jen and a sleeping Oscar and Doug and Leora, but I ran into not one but two people I know.  First Rich, who I bumped into as he was coming out of a store on 5th Avenue, and then Todd, when he and his girlfriend were seated next to us at Franny’s (which was quite tasty, for the record).

Well, I’m not making any major life decisions today and my lease doesn’t run out until October or thereabouts, so for now, at least, I’m staying put.

Except that I’m off to DC until Saturday night for my annual pro bono pilgrimage, although this is the first year that I am actually staying at the hotel that the conference is in rather than with my friend Christopher (who I’ll be seeing in NY on Sunday when he’s visiting, so it’s okay).

  • Yes, We’re 12.

Any weekend that leaves your abs in pain from laughing hysterically is a good one, at least in my book.  Thanks to all for another year of ridiculousness, summed up in a phrase that made me laugh more than anything in a while:  while searching for the word "flaccid," John mistakenly uttered the phrase "flatulent penis," and then spent a decent amount of time describing what this would look like, in more detail than I’d ever, EVER, want to imagine.  The pictures (of the weekend, not of the flatulent penis) are here.

  • Off to the Woods

for the 9th annual OJ.  What’s OJ, you ask?  Read all about it.

  • Wicked Huge Lobstah!

    Larger than Life Lobster

I figured since I’ve been so lame about blogging lately, the least I could do was give you a good picture.  I was up in Maine this weekend with the family, and after my irritating trip up (which I’ll expound upon some other time), I had a relaxing weekend, and enjoyed an amazing lobster roll at Scales in the Portland Public Market — butter, lemon, lobster.  End of story.  Chip was winding down his fall foliage tour and met me in Portland, so we drove back to NYC together.  After talking up Rein’s Deli, as we hungrily turned into Vernon, CT, we discovered that the power had gone out in the town, so Rein’s was closed.  Still hungry, we almost ended up at a Taco Bell (it would have only been my second exposure to a Taco Bell), but at the last minute, spotted Little Mark’s BBQ.  Ribs, sweet potato fries, pickles, cole slaw, and birch beer weren’t the best I’d ever had, but infinitely better than anything we could’ve gotten at Taco Bell, that’s for damn sure.  Chip was also kind enough to get me Julie & Julia, which I recently wrote about on Gothamist.  Very psyched about that — thanks, Chip!

More on tonight’s activities, featuring a vodka tour with the author of The Vodka Cookbook, later this week on Gothamist.

  • Nothing Says “I Love the USA” Like a Pig Roast

Caja2_pict_smallAfter last night’s wonderful picnic dinner and Shakespeare in the Park, I wearily came home to pack.  I’m off to Kismet for the long weekend, and in honor of the holiday, we’re roasting a pig.  John purchased a Caja China, I’ve packed my recipes from my pig-roasting class (hoping that I can translate from a suckling pig to a regular-sized porker), and we’re ready to go.  I’ll let you know how it goes.  Have a great weekend! (And happy early birthday to my lovely siblings, Bill & Katie, who will hopefully be coming out at some point this weekend for a beach day).

  • Austin Report

Made it back safely from Austin and the conference — three days full of schmoozing and eating, although I didn’t get to see much of the city, unfortunately.  Strangely enough, I also didn’t really take any pictures, even of the food.  Not really sure why.  I arrived late on Wednesday night and had delicious pork mole enchiladas, spicy tuna ceviche, and a margarita or two at Manuel’s with my co-worker, Mark, then rose bright and early to set up at the conference.  I truly enjoy going to these things, as it gives me a chance to see the folks I usually only get to interact with via phone and email.

Thursday night I met up with my friend Sarah, and it was so good to catch up with her over nibbles at Z’Tejas (including a very good seared tuna).  Considering the last time we saw each other was December, there was certainly plenty to discuss.  As she went back to studying, I met up with some folks for First Thursday — the first Thursday of each month people congregate on South Congress Street, where the stores stay open late and there’s music, crafts, and plenty of Shiner Bock, the local beer.  We ended up at El Sol y La Luna, where I made room for a barbacoa taco, although when my companions got ice cream at Amy’s, I had to bow out (I know, me give up food?!  I was full!).

The next morning, I was up early once again, but this time for breakfast with Andy from Bronx Defenders at Las Manitas.   Andy, like me, had done his food research, even going so far as to buy a book on Mexican food in Austin.  No wonder we get along so well.  We had the Mexican coffee, with a dash of cinnamon, a perfect companion to the mild spiciness of the tomatillo sauce in my chilaquiles.  My new mission is to find a place in New York like this — cheap, fresh, amazing Mexican food, particularly breakfast.  If you know of any, especially in Manhattan, let me know — I get the feeling there’s probably something like it in Queens, but that’s not too practical for weekdays, at least.   After a day at the conference, I went with my Pro Bono Net team (Mark and Liz) to watch some dancing at La Zona Rosa (the official conference social event of the night), but then we peeled off to head to Threadgill’s for some Texas home cooking.  Although I could have gotten a meal composed purely of fried things (chicken fried steak, fried green tomatoes, fried okra), I stuck to the fried catfish and kept the remainder of the meal unfried.

Saturday, I had breakfast at Las Manitas again (it was soooo good, I just had to.  Plus it was close to the hotel.  I couldn’t resist.), then packed and headed off to the airport.  I grabbed a Salt Lick BBQ brisket sandwich for the plane (I noticed it at the airport when I landed.  Even if it didn’t travel all that well, it sure beats airplane food), and made it safely back home.   After all the eating, I have to say that the $15 charge to use the gym for the duration of my stay at the hotel was money very well spent.  Thanks to the Chowhounds and Allison for the food ideas!

  • The Stars at Night Are Big and Bright

Deep in the heart of Texas!  I’m off to Austin for the Equal Justice Conference (a pro bono/legal services shindig), so posting may be light for the rest of the week.  Looking forward to some good Tex-Mex (I’ve already gotten some recommendations from the Texas Chowhounds and a Texas-raised co-worker) and some good margaritas for Cinco de Mayo.  I’m also going to catch up with my friend Sarah, who’s down there for b-school, and is taking time from her end of the semester crunch to meet me for dinner.  Talk to you later, y’all!

  • Monday, Monday*

GenevieveRecovering from a weekend in DC — I went down for the annual Pro Bono Institute conference.  I had a great time schmoozing and boozing with my Cljfellow pro bono cronies.  Thanks to Carrie, Ian, and Genevieve (the peanut on the left) for hosting cocktails in their room, and thanks to Rochelle for going to the Supreme Court with me (even though we were dreadfully late).  Got to spend time with Christopher (pictured at right), which was lovely, and also was fortunate enough to get some time in with Ryan, who took us to the Curry Club, where we got to chat with the owner.  Saturday was an uBriantterly lazy day, although we did manage to make it to the gym, but the evening wCaitlinas more lively, when Brian (on the left) and Caitlin (on the right) joined us for dinner at Kaz Sushi Bistro for some utterly sublime toro, and then on to 51st State (for the third night in a row) for waaaay too many cocktails.  Thankfully we were able to recover over brunch.  Extra thanks to Brian for schlepping in from Charlottesville and to Christopher for the hospitality.

Today was job hunting, followed by a quick workout and then meeting my oldest (not in age, but in number of years we’ve known each other) friend Ali at Otto (not pictured — believe it or not I left my camera home that night and my cameraphone certainly wouldn’t have done her justice).  My fridge is full of good food from Fresh Direct, so I’m good to go for the week.  The coffeemaker is loaded and ready to brew at 8:30 a.m.  And now — bedtime.  I’m pooped.

    * Yes, the brain may be fried at the moment, so that’s all I could think of, but I’ve always loved that song.
