v. 2.0

  • Radio Surfing

My friend Beth wrote a great piece in the New York Times about the joy of car radio surfing. We were commenting back and forth on Facebook about it and she mentioned that in an earlier draft she had mentioned a day she heard me singing "Stand By" on WLIR one morning before school. I had totally forgotten about that (and still not sure I remember why they let me sing on the air . . .)

  • A Song for the Day

and generally a good philosophy, V-Day or not. Spread love, y'all.

  • Morning Melodrama

MugTo put it mildly, I am not a morning person. Minor annoyances — like when the top of my leakproof coffee mug decides that it doesn't want to seal shut properly, thereby rendering it UN-leakproof — send me into a rage. (On the flip side, when it started working again, it made my day.)

  • Songs In My Head

This one keeps popping up . . .

  • Winter in NYC

It's amazing how quickly one's thoughts about winter in NYC can shift from "the snow makes everything look so lovely and serene — it's a winter wonderland!" to "how am I expected to get around with these massive piles of filthy snow and ankle-deep puddles of nasty slush, especially when the damn trains aren't functioning properly!?!?" Deep breaths.

  • A Taste to Tide You Over

until I get my act together and post my pictures from Oaxaca . . .

  • Thank You, Mr. Seeger

One of the albums I remember most from my childhood is Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie Together in Concert.  RIP, Pete. You made the world a better place. My uncle would have been very sad to hear that you're gone, but maybe he's got a better seat at your concerts now.

  • Musical Memory Lane

Last night a neighbor and I were talking about music from our childhood days and he remembered a song from Sesame Street that I hadn't thought of in years called "Someday, Little Children." We then discussed some other gems, including the soundtrack to Really Rosie and various songs from the Sesame Street Alphabet Album ("Would you like to buy an O?"). It's looking like I have to buy some music for my nephew!

  • Booze You Can Use: Have A Division Bell

Tomorrow I leave for a week in Oaxaca, Mexico. As you may know, Oaxaca is ground zero for mezcal, and I'll be spending a great deal of time visiting palenques and learning about mezcal production (this is, after all, a USBGNY trip). For those of you who aren't joining me on the trip, you can play along at home, and make yourself a Division Bell (or go to Mayahuel and have one there).

    Division Bell
1 oz Del Maguey San Luis Del Rio mezcal
    3/4 oz. Aperol
3/4 oz. Maraska or 1/2 oz. Luxardo (Maraschino)
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
Shake well with ice, strain into a cocktail glass. Twist and squeeze a grapefruit peel over the glass. Rub the rim of the glass with the peel, then discard it.
