  • We’re Wired

A big shout-out to Jen from Gothamist, who received a Rave Award from Wired Magazine.  I’m really proud to be part of the Gothamist team, and Jen truly deserves this honor!

  • I Hear Ya

I think she’s on to something: "I started online dating at age 35, hoping to meet a few suitors in my
new city. But all I met were frantic older men who were more concerned
with the state of my womb than with wooing me."  Note to men over the age of 50: you are not appropriate dating material for me.  Period.

  • Debut

    burrata

It’s the debut of the new camera!  I took it to Morandi the other night.  Didn’t take very many pictures, as I only bought the 1G card last night.  Unfortunately, this burrata was ice cold and we had to keep it at the table for a while before it got remotely oozy.  See the rest on Flickr.

  • Upgrade

My new digi-cam arrived last night!  Pics to come as soon as I figure out how to use the thing . . .

I remember when Mom and Stephen offered to buy me a digital camera in 2003; at the time, I couldn’t imagine that I’d use it all that much.  I used my regular camera often, and just got the photos put on CD’s when they were developed, which seemed fine.  Now I rarely go anywhere without it (very bloggery/dorky of me, I know).  Thanks again for getting me hooked!

  • Just Catchin’ Up

First of all, in case anyone was wondering what was up with yesterday’s post, Vox is a new blogging system that’s in previews right now.  I’ve been playing around with it — let me know if you’d like an invitation.  Not sure I like the way it displays here on TypePad when you cross-post, though.

The other morning, when I went running, Lance Armstrong (or at least his voice) congratulated me on "my longest workout yet": a 4.8 mile run according to my Nike+iPod.  I don’t think it was quite that long — I think I need to calibrate the thing with a jog around Washington Square Park, which is roughly a half-mile.  Was going to do that this morning but couldn’t get out of bed.  Perhaps this was due to the pig pickin’ I went to last night — we went to Daisy May’s BBQ for the half-pig to wish Rob well before his six-week-long trek.

Thanks to all for the Waikiki food recommendations — keep ’em coming!

  • Technology — A Love/Hate Relationship

Last weekend I purchased an iPod nano to replace the antique 4G iPod I’ve had for years.  I fell in love immediately; I could hardly believe that this teeny thing held the same amount of music as my old iPod, which suddenly seemed like a brick.  We got along swimmingly for a few days, until my Nike+iPod kit arrived in the mail (I’ve been running so much, it seemed like a fun idea).  I plugged it into my new nano and learned that I needed to update the software on it.  Fine — I had done this before, no problem.  Alas, I was dreadfully wrong.  Since then, all my music has been erased from my new nano and I get error messages galore.  I’ve followed all the steps on iPod help to no avail.  So today, I have a meeting smack next to the new Fifth Avenue Apple Store.  I’ll be at the Genius Bar this afternoon, laptop and nano in tow, keeping my fingers crossed.  Wish me luck.

UPDATE:  The Geniuses were able to help me out, so I think I’m ready to rock and roll.  Will test it all out with a run later tonight!

  • Feed Me

So some of you may have been getting sporadic email updates from Bloglet at times when I updated this site.  As you probably know, Bloglet has been incredibly unreliable lately; I’ve gotten comments from friends that they hadn’t gotten an update in weeks and they were worried that I had cut them off.  It wasn’t me, I swear.  Last week, I switched my email subscription service to FeedBlitz – you’ll notice the new subscription box on the side.  Coincidentally, I got this email from Bloglet this morning:

Bloglet began as a hobby of mine to help manage the random blogs I’d read on a daily basis. This was back when words like "blog" and "rss" had yet to enter most people’s vocabulary.
Now "blogs" are being mentioned on the Daily Show, but Bloglet still remains a hobby. It’s obvious that I don’t have the time to turn this hobby into something that offers a fair level of service to users.
On the other hand, Phil and the team over at Feedblitz has been doing a great job building their blog-to-email product into a viable service. They’ve even built a Bloglet-to-Feedblitz converter. I recommend that any current users of Bloglet give them a try.

So here’s the deal.  If you were a Bloglet subscriber, I tried to import you.  If you have gotten a FeedBlitz email update, you’re in good shape and you don’t have to do anything.  If not, I mistakenly thought your email was spam and you’ll have to resubscribe (oddly, there were a bunch of spam emails that "subscribed" to the Bloget update).  So — let me know how it works, if you have any questions, etc.  And enjoy the new feed update!

  • From 700 to Zero

in . . . oh, about a week.  I’m using 43 Folders Inbox Zero series on how to keep your inbox empty.  Given that for the past five years I have used my email inbox at work as a giant repository rather than a useful tool, this is a huge step for me.  Since I started my new job, I have been much, much better about keeping the inbox count fairly low (thanks to GTD techniques, to some degree), but after I returned from DC, the inbox was bursting at the seams at over 700 messages.  I’m down to about 130 as of today, but aim to have it empty before I head down south next weekend.  Wish me luck!

  • Panic

Some of you may have noticed that if you tried to get here without typing www, you got an error from TypePad.  Well, now having followed their directions to fix it, this problem is solved.  I now, however, can’t access my sweetblogomine email, or my Gothamist email, which is linked up to it.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be resolved quickly, because I feel like I’ve just been cut off from all humanity.

  • Nerd Alert

I got my hot new laptop this weekend.  I’ve had my previous computer for about six years — it was time for it to go, but it has served me well.  With my return to the corporate world came a return of a lovely phenomenon which I had all but forgotten — the end-of-the-year bonus.  Laptop, here I come.

My new baby arrived on Friday, but I hadn’t gotten to spend any quality time alone with it until last night.  I was up until 2 AM with RCN (my internet provider) and Netgear (who makes my router) figuring out why the hell my wireless internet access wasn’t working.  I have learned that apparently my cordless phone and my router can’t play nice in the sandbox together.  Guess my phone’s days are numbered.  Now I have to unplug my phone in order to get online, but here I am.  Grrr.
